Strategic vs. Tactical Sourcing

There are different ways to approach supply management, but the approach taken will always be focused on meeting objectives and addressing the specific needs of each organization. In supply management, there are two fundamental approaches: strategic sourcing and tactical sourcing, primarily differentiated by the type of strategies and actions executed to achieve a specific goal.

What is Strategic Sourcing?

Strategic sourcing focuses on long-term planning and creating partnerships with key suppliers. It aims to achieve profitability and enhance value, making corporate partnerships one of the key aspects of this process.

Some benefits of strategic sourcing include cost reduction, continuous improvement, and collaboration, with its main strategies directed towards activities such as:

  • Market analysis and supplier evaluation.
  • Negotiation of long-term contracts.
  • Development of strategic relationships with suppliers.
  • Continuous evaluation of supplier performance.
  • Implementation of sustainability strategies.

What does tactical supply focus on?

On the other hand, tactical sourcing involves actions and strategies focused on immediate or short-term objectives or needs. In other words, it is the execution of strategies defined in strategic sourcing through less complex, day-to-day actions aimed at fulfilling and aligning with long-term objectives.

Some benefits of tactical sourcing relate to operational efficiency, conflict resolution, compliance, and proper inventory management. In this approach, the main activities carried out include:

  • Managing purchase orders.
  • Tracking deliveries.
  • Resolving immediate issues with suppliers.
  • Ensuring inventory availability.
  • Complying with contractual terms and conditions.

Both approaches are complementary and necessary for effective Supply Chain Management. While strategic sourcing sets the foundation and long-term guidelines, tactical sourcing ensures that daily operations are conducted efficiently and in alignment with strategic objectives. Both approaches are complementary and necessary for effective Supply Chain Management.
